Have you ever read a short story and then answered questions about it? That is called reading comprehension. It means reading something carefully and understanding what it says.

Today, we will read two short passages and answer questions about them. But first, let us learn some helpful tips!

Tips for Reading Comprehension

Follow these simple steps when you read a passage:

Step 1: Read the passage twice. The first time, read it slowly to understand the story. The second time, look for important details.
Step 2: Find the key words. Key words are important words that tell you who, what, where, and when.
Step 3: Read each question carefully. Look for the answer in the passage. The answer is usually right there in the sentences.
Step 4: Answer in complete sentences. Do not write just one word. Write a full sentence.

Think about it: If a question asks "Where did Rani go?", look for a place name in the passage!

Key Words and Meanings

Word	Meaning

Passage	A short piece of writing (a paragraph or a few paragraphs)

Detail	A small but important piece of information in the passage
Opinion	What you think or feel about something

Key Points to Remember

Always read the passage at least twice before answering questions.
Look for key words: who (person), what (thing/action), where (place), when (time).
The answer to most questions is found inside the passage itself.
Write your answers in complete sentences.
For opinion questions, write what you think and give a reason.

Passage 1: My Pet Dog

Read the passage carefully.

My name is Arjun. I live in Pune with my family. I have a pet dog. His name is Bruno. Bruno is brown and white. He is three years old. Every morning, I take Bruno for a walk in the park near our house. Bruno loves to run and play with a ball. In the evening, I give him milk and biscuits. Bruno wags his tail when he is happy. He is my best friend. I love Bruno very much.

Passage 2: The School Picnic

Read the passage carefully.

Last Saturday, the students of Class 3 went on a picnic to Nehru Garden. The garden was near a big lake. The children went by bus. Their class teacher, Mrs. Sharma, went with them. They reached the garden at ten o'clock in the morning. The children played games like kho-kho and hide-and-seek. At lunchtime, everyone sat under a large banyan tree and ate their tiffin. Rani shared her sandwiches with Meena. After lunch, they sang songs together. They came back to school at four o'clock in the evening. Everyone was tired but very happy. It was the best day of the year!

Always try to write a full sentence. Use words from the question to start your answer.
