Let Us Begin!

Imagine your friend tells you a story like this: "The prince married the princess. A dragon attacked the village. The prince fought the dragon." Does that make sense? Not really!

A good story must have events in the correct order. This is called story sequencing -- putting events in the order they happened.

Understanding Story Sequencing

What is a story sequence?

A story sequence is the order in which events happen in a story. Every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Sequence Words

We use special words to show the order of events. These are called sequence words or time-order words:

FirstThenNextAfter thatFinally
The event that happens at the startThe event that comes after the firstThe event that followsSomething that happens laterThe last event

Think about it: When you tell someone how to make chai, you say: "First, boil water. Then, add tea leaves. Next, add milk. Finally, pour into a cup." That is sequencing!
