Learning Objectives
Let Us Begin!

How do you come to school every day? Some of you walk, some come by bus, and some ride a bicycle. When your family goes to another city, you may travel by train or car.

The vehicles that carry us from one place to another are called means of transport. Let us learn about the different ways people travel!

What Is Transport?

Transport means moving people or things from one place to another. We use different vehicles for transport. Some vehicles move on land, some on water, and some in the air.

Think about it: How would you send a gift to your cousin in another city? You would use transport!

Three Types of Transport

1. Land Transport

These vehicles move on roads and railway tracks on land.

Examples: Bus, car, auto-rickshaw, bicycle, train, bullock cart, motorcycle, truck.

In India, many people travel by bus and train. In villages, bullock carts are still used.

2. Water Transport

These vehicles move on water -- rivers, lakes, and seas.

Examples: Boat, ship, steamer, ferry.

In Kerala, people use boats to travel through the backwaters. Big ships carry goods across the sea.

3. Air Transport

These vehicles fly in the air. They are the fastest means of transport.

Examples: Aeroplane, helicopter.

When we need to travel very far, like from Delhi to Chennai, we can take an aeroplane. It is very fast!

Think about it: Which type of transport is the fastest? Which one is the slowest?
