Introduction

A house is a shelter that protects us from heat, cold, rain, wind, and wild animals. Every person needs a house to live safely and comfortably.

India is a large country with many different climates -- hot deserts, heavy rainfall areas, cold mountains, and flood-prone plains. That is why houses in different parts of India look very different from each other!

How Climate Affects House Design
Region / ClimateHouse FeatureReason
Rajasthan (hot desert)Thick walls, small windows, flat roofsThick walls keep the inside cool; small windows block hot wind and sand
Kerala (heavy rain)Sloping roofs with tilesRainwater slides off easily and does not collect on the roof
Kashmir (heavy snow)Sloping roofs, wooden housesSnow slides off sloping roofs; wood keeps the house warm
Assam (floods)Stilt houses (raised on poles)Raised floors keep the house above flood water
Big citiesMulti-storey apartmentsLess land is available, so buildings go upward

The climate and geography of a place decide what kind of house people build there.

How Houses Have Changed Over Time

Long ago, early humans lived in caves to protect themselves from wild animals and bad weather. Slowly, they learned to build huts using mud, leaves, and branches. Over time, people discovered bricks, cement, and steel, and began building stronger houses.

Today, we have tall buildings with many floors, lifts, running water, and electricity. Houses have changed from simple mud huts to modern apartments with all comforts.

Example: Changes Over Time

Caves (earliest) --> Mud huts --> Brick houses --> Multi-storey buildings --> Smart homes (today).
