India has 42 UNESCO World Heritage Sites -- places that are so special that the whole world agrees they must be protected. Some are ancient temples, some are forts, some are caves, and some are natural wonders like forests and mountains. These places tell the story of India's rich history and nature.

What is a World Heritage Site?

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) selects places around the world that are very important for all of humanity. There are two types:

1. Cultural Heritage Sites: Made by humans -- temples, forts, monuments, caves.

2. Natural Heritage Sites: Made by nature -- forests, mountains, wildlife areas.
