Learning Objectives
Let Us Begin!

We use money to buy things we need -- food, books, toys, and more.

In India, our money is called the Rupee. We write it as Rs or use the symbol .

We also have smaller units called paise. 100 paise = 1 rupee.

Money comes in two forms: coins (round, metal) and notes (paper).

Understanding Money

Indian Coins

We commonly use these coins: Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5, and Rs 10.

Indian Notes

We commonly use these notes: Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 200, and Rs 500.

Think about it: If you have a Rs 10 coin and a Rs 10 note, do they have the same value? Yes! Both are worth Rs 10.

Adding Money

To find the total cost of items, we add their prices.

If a pencil costs Rs 5 and an eraser costs Rs 3, the total cost = Rs 5 + Rs 3 = Rs 8.

Finding Change

When you pay more than the cost, the shopkeeper gives back the extra money. This is called change.

Change = Money given - Total cost.

If you buy a toy for Rs 35 and give Rs 50, your change = Rs 50 - Rs 35 = Rs 15.

A Simple Price List

ItemPrice
PencilRs 5
EraserRs 3
SharpenerRs 7
NotebookRs 20
Colour boxRs 40
RulerRs 10

Using this list: A pencil + an eraser + a sharpener = Rs 5 + Rs 3 + Rs 7 = Rs 15.

Examples
Example 1: Adding Prices

Sita buys a notebook for Rs 20 and a pencil for Rs 5. How much does she spend?

Total = Rs 20 + Rs 5 = Rs 25.

Example 2: Finding Change from Rs 50

Ravi buys a ruler for Rs 10 and an eraser for Rs 3. He gives Rs 50 to the shopkeeper.

Total cost = Rs 10 + Rs 3 = Rs 13. Change = Rs 50 - Rs 13 = Rs 37.

Example 3: Finding Change from Rs 100

Meena buys a colour box for Rs 40 and a notebook for Rs 20. She pays Rs 100.

Total cost = Rs 40 + Rs 20 = Rs 60. Change = Rs 100 - Rs 60 = Rs 40.
