Did you know that India was not always a free country? For nearly 200 years, the British ruled India. Many brave men and women fought hard so that we could live in a free India. These brave people are called freedom fighters. On 15th August 1947, India finally became independent!

Why Did India Need Freedom Fighters?

The British came to India as traders. Slowly, they started ruling the country. Under British rule, Indian people faced many problems:

The Salt March (Dandi March) -- 1930

The British made a law that Indians could not make their own salt and had to buy expensive British salt. Gandhiji walked 385 km from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi beach to make salt from sea water. Thousands of people joined him. This peaceful protest showed the world that Indians wanted freedom.
