Learning Objectives
Let Us Begin!

When we speak, we pause and change our voice to show meaning. But when we write, we use special marks called punctuation marks to do the same job.

Without punctuation, our writing would be very confusing. Let us learn the most important punctuation rules!

The Full Stop (.)

A full stop is a small dot placed at the end of a sentence that tells or states something. Such a sentence is called a statement.

A statement gives information. It does not ask anything.

Examples:

Ravi goes to school every day.

My grandmother lives in Jaipur.

We eat rice and dal for lunch.

Think about it: A full stop tells the reader, "This sentence is complete. Stop here."

The Question Mark (?)

A question mark is placed at the end of a sentence that asks something. Such a sentence is called a question.

Examples:

What is your name?

Where does Anita live?

Did you finish your homework?

Tip: Questions often begin with words like What, Where, When, Who, Why, How, Is, Are, Do, Did, Can.

Capital Letters

We must use a capital letter (big letter) in these cases:

1. At the start of every sentence: The mango is sweet.

2. For names of people: Asha, Rohan, Neha

3. For names of places: Delhi, India, Ganga

4. For the word "I": I am going to school.

Remember: The word "I" is always written as a capital letter, no matter where it appears in a sentence.
